Building traffic and links to a blog takes significant time as well as effort. One of the basics of regular traffic and links from other sites is to write regularly. Regular blogging pings the servers regularly (as they are updated) and brings in traffic.
Blogging ideas can be borrowed, but content should be original one. When I say frequently updated blog, then there are two possibilites, one blogger is writing fresh content like news and second - blogger is writing old topic but in his words and according to his/her imagination.
Taking the first instance, if one writes on fresh news and latest happening, not only he will get audience from social networking sites like digg, SU but also he will get the linkbacks as others would love to link him and take his/her work as reference. Surely good thing.
Second instance depends upon quality and research by the blogger. This is like writing according to interest and some time there will be scope of fresh news also. These blogs can be categorized as online tips, troubleshooting for specific thing, sharing views and stuff.
Conclusion- If we look up at instantaneous traffic and link popularity then blogging the fresh is in. However the only mantra to success with blogging is to update blog frequently, no matter by fresh blogging or by regular blogging.
