Explaination on domain names

By admin | Oct 3, 2008

Generally there is small difference in terminology as used in IT environment and web usage for domain names. In IT circle specifically domain name is referred to a group which is functional in a particular domain so as to ease the network administration queries and other user management related tasks. In case of IT sector, along with domain names concept of DNS comes into picture which stands for Domain Naming Service.

However, In the web world, domain name is the name given to a particular IP so that user can directly access the data on a server without memorizing the IP details of it. For example, the domain name for this blog is adspotlive.com. In fact there is an IP which has been assigned to the  this server. With so many websites and blogs out there it is really hard task for user to keep track of all IPs, so a domain name is natted with the server specific IP which pops up as normal website for an end user.

Again domain names can be categorized into many sub types like generic domain names, premium domain names, brand able domain names and few others.

Registration of domain names: On web, there are many domain name resellers and registrars further accredited by the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ). The function of ICANN is to oversee the name and number systems of the Internet. New domains are registered through domain registrars on term basis like 1 year, 2 year and up to 10 years.

What is subdomain? : Well majority of us have an idea of what subdomain is. However for others, subdomain is further one level down on FQDN (Fully Qualified domain name). This blog is on blog.adspotlive.com. This means it is on subdomain where main domain is adspotlive.com.

With advancement in technology, there are many tools which can be used for gathering more and detailed information about specific domain. Details vary from traffic, age to back link checked. More traffic on a domain name means more popular is the website. Interestingly traffic to a domain may depend on authority of the domain, name (brand able and short names do better), link popularity factors.

Managed Hosting and related things to be considered

By admin | Sep 13, 2008

Managed hosting and outsourced solutions are very good options for service providers irrespective of the individual sizes who prefer to focus on respective core business at same time relying on a particular trusted provider with a reputation for quality software and customer satisfaction.  Good managed services provider can offer IT outsourcing services including managing networks, IT infrastructure, application support, managed hosting and business processes. This provides customers the best of control and flexibility over their information systems without cost and infrastructure of running them.

In this competitive environment, focusing on core competencies is the key to survival and success. On same  time the level of security and availability are two big factors which serves as main criteria as for managed services providers. For example if one is going to make transition of the services running on his end to other managed services provider then he/she must think about few key things like the availability of the data, technical expertise, security issues in data centre and in environment, working environment of the new host etc. Another important aspect of the process is signing of SLA which is integral part of deal and includes all details of deal from start to end. Further one has to check the standards of hosting organization and verify whether and organization is following the global standards like ISO 2000 and chain management, process management is properly followed.

Well this is not part of the blogging thing but this is related to my official work and I have just come up with another informational article as part of a bit awareness before going through transition for your business.

Google Chrome’s Release - FireFox or IE

By admin | Sep 10, 2008

Finally Google has comeup with its own browser and well with just one update it has found it’s way on good percentage of people. After all it’s Google’s product and it does not need any special advertisement. So with a single release, big percentage of web surfer’s is on Chrome’s side.

Tech details: I am using Chrome for past few days and it is working smooth. Internet browsing is cool and there is/are no specific faults. Page loading is fast and there is no relation as such between two pages in singe window. All I say, it is much similar to FireFox. But there are few things which only FireFox is having like one click opening of all bookmarks, large pool of browser enhancements, good plugins etc.

Who loses share then? :
Chrome may affect browser share of other browser, which one is question. IE has come up with version 8 beta and opera is also working good. But with respect to the market share by these browser I do not think that chrome gonna hit them up big time. However with many feature like FireFox, major share from FF will be shifting to Chrome.

Well it is to be seen how much firefox will be hit by Chrome in coming releases. Google as usual going to lead the track.
